How Rooftop Solar Helps Your Company Meet ESG and Net-Zero Targets
If a customer or auditor asks your plant operators to provide the emission data, you already know how long it takes to come up with even an approximate answer. For most factories, electricity consumed is the part of that footprint you can change fastest. That is why rooftop solar keeps showing up in ESG plans: it is a physical asset on your own roof, it produces metered units, and it starts to displace grid power from the month it’s commissioned. How far it takes you toward net zero is a separate question, and the honest answer comes in two parts.
Where Your Electricity Sits in the Emissions Count
Emissions records split a company’s footprint into three scopes. Scope 1 is fuel you burn yourself, such as diesel in a generator or gas in a boiler. Scope 2 is the electricity you buy from the grid. Scope 3 covers everything else in your value chain, from raw materials to product disposal, because at almost every stage of the logistical supply chain management some amount of energy consumption is done.
A factory’s grid power lands in Scope 2. Each unit your roof generates and you consume is a unit you don’t draw from the grid, so rooftop solar directly reduces Scope 2. It does not make any change in Scope 1, and it has little effect on most Scope 3 categories. Before the installation, if one has clarity about this, then it is easy to know what to really claim.
Reporting Frameworks: What Does It Demand
SEBI’s Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report(BRSR) is mandatory for India’s top 1,000 listed companies. Its BRSR Core section asks for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions along with the share of energy drawn from renewable sources, and it’s being phased into independent assurance, reaching all top 1,000 companies in FY 2026-27. Assurance means an external party checks where the numbers come from. Intensity figures, such as emissions per unit of turnover, are also reported, so a falling Scope 2 number can improve even as production grows.
If you are not listed, this can still reach you. Larger listed companies must report on their top upstream and downstream partners, which can include the factories that supply them. A buyer’s questionnaire may arrive long before any regulation names you.
How Rooftop Solar Moves the Numbers
Only two lines in your disclosure move. Purchased electricity goes down, and the renewable share of what you consume goes up. Both trace back to one thing: power your roof generated and your plant used on the spot. No offsets are involved. You just didn’t pay the grid for those units.
What makes this useful for reporting is that you can measure them. A monitored system logs generation by the day and month, which is exactly what an assurance reviewer will ask for. Visol India’s O&M work includes remote monitoring and routine testing along with reporting, so when you disclose a figure, you can point to a record behind it instead of an estimate.
Rooftop solar also addresses a quieter ESG problem: budgets. Sustainability programmes often stall because nobody wants to fund them. Under an OPEX model, a rooftop solar installation company in Mumbai, such as Visol India, invests in the plant, and you pay for the power. The project then doesn’t have to compete with machinery for capital.
Where Would Rooftop Solar Not Work
A roof has a ceiling. Even a well-filled one usually covers only a share of a plant’s consumption, and it generates nothing at night. A factory that runs multiple shifts can’t completely escape from the usage of grid power for the rest. Scope 1 stays too: diesel gensets, boilers and furnaces don’t get cleaner because panels went up.
India has a national net-zero target for 2070, and companies set their own zero-use deadlines. Rooftop solar is a first move on the electricity side, not the final resort. Next comes an energy audit to cut consumption itself. Where land exists, ground-mounted capacity adds more generation, and larger loads can source the balance through open access.
Claim What You Can Show
ESG scrutiny has made vague green claims dangerous. You declare your plant ‘carbon neutral’ because it has solar panels invites sustainability questions that you can not answer. The estimates about how many units your rooftop plant generated last year, against a stated total consumption, hold up. Don’t round up, either. A figure an auditor can reproduce from your meter beats a bigger one they can’t.
Keep a simple file: system capacity, commission date, monthly generation and the matching electricity bills. It takes little effort, and a reviewer will ask for it first.
Expect the monthly curve to move. In Mumbai, monsoon cloud cuts generation for part of the year, and dust or humid haze can trim it further between cleanings. That is normal, and a reviewer who notices a seasonal fluctuation alongside a clear schedule will read it as a design the plant is made for. A flat line would raise more questions than a curve with a monsoon dip.
What to Ask a Rooftop Solar Installation Company in Mumbai
The installer shapes how useful the system is for reporting. A few questions separate a vendor from a long-term partner.
- How will you track generation, and can you provide monthly reports?
- What does the roof assessment cover, including shed condition and structural load?
- How do you handle cleaning during dust season and the monsoon?
- What happens if the plant underperforms?
Any rooftop solar installation company in Mumbai should be able to answer those questions without any ambiguity. Analyse a sample monthly report and the terms of the generation guarantee. If the answers stay vague at the proposal stage, they won’t get clearer once the plant is live, when the system is yours, and the follow-up is theirs.
Start With the Roof Assessment and the Bill
Rooftop solar won’t write your ESG report or deliver net zero on its own. It turns a slice of your electricity use into something metered and easy to document, more than most ESG actions can manage. Start with your last twelve months of bills and a look at the usable roof, then determine how much of the daytime load the roof can carry. Visol India’s free site feasibility study covers that groundwork, and its team also advises on energy audits and sustainability goals. If you wish to compare rooftop solar installation companies in Mumbai, ask for that assessment first, and let the numbers decide the system size.
