The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) unveiled the inaugural Mumbai Climate Action Plan (MCAP) on 27th August 2021to strategize methods to address climate change issues. At the BMC Headquarters, State Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray unveiled the proposal.
In December 2020, Mumbai joined the C40 Cities climate leadership organization and is now preparing a climate action plan by the C40 principles and requirements. The effort coincided with the introduction of the MCAP website (http://mcap.mcgm.gov.in), which allows people and professionals to submit comments and recommendations.
MCAP is scheduled to be fully operational by October 202,1[U1] in time for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in November 2021. The program is being developed in partnership with the World Resources Institute in India as the knowledge partner.
Waste management, sustainable transportation, renewable energy, urban floods and water management, urban green cover and biodiversity, and air quality will be the emphasis of the action plan.
City and climate profiling, as well as sectoral analyses, have already been completed. Stakeholder discussions, as well as implementation methods, are still needed to draught near-term vision setting (2030), mid-term vision setting (2040), and long-term vision setting (2050).
C40 brings together 97 of the world’s most populous cities to “collaborate effectively, share information, and promote real, quantifiable, and sustainable climate action.”
BEST buses’ transition to electronic vehicle feel in the island city, and improved road networks on the transportation front; underground water holding tanks planned in five flood-prone spots to mitigate waterlogging; and installing trash-brooms to keep floating garbage from carrying into the sea are among the new initiatives on climate action already set in motion for Mumbai across the focus areas.
“The plan will be completed within the next two months, and execution will begin in November,” Aaditya Thackeray stated. The major goal of this framework is to develop a comprehensive strategy to handle climate change’s difficulties and reduce the dangers that come with it. The plan’s implementation will result in a significant decrease in greenhouse gas emissions while also conserving the city’s natural resources.”
Sanjay Bansod, Minister of State for Environment, Mayor KishoriPednekar, Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, MMRDA Commissioner SVR Srinivas, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board President AJarhad, and stakeholders from C40 cities and WRI India were also present for the event.
Meanwhile, the BMC unveiled five electric vehicles for use by the civic body. The truck was leased from Energy Efficiency Services Limited, a Government of India energy service firm, for Rs27,000 per month, including maintenance and repairs. The BMC intends to purchase approximately 40 more electric cars, which will be utilized by elected politicians and civic officials.
